Film Critique/Presentation/Discussion Assignment

You will conduct a film critique and discussion (in the form of a presentation).

• You may come up with your own outline but here are some ideas:
  You are encouraged to come up with your own original ideas and format.
  These are just some prompts to get you started:
  
  MEDIA-RELATED CONSIDERATIONS:
• Address the relevance of the film to the course “Movies about the Media” (include anyrelevant readings posted on Canvas and/or bring in your own)
• How authentically or accurately does your film portray the profession? the ‘historical’ event at
  issue, or, if it’s a non-docudrama, the narrative issues?
• If your film was based on a print or TV journalist (or another media professional), how would
  you evaluate their job performance: How ethical are they? How believable? How competent?
• What kinds of comparisons can you make between your film and other films screenedin class?
• Add your own questions/ideas here

MOVIE-RELATED CONSIDERATIONS:

• Whose story is it? e. from which character’s perspective or point-of-view is the story presented?
• How would you evaluate some of the cinematic choices the director has made: Location? Lighting? Editing? Casting? Camera Shots/Angles? Music? And so on?
• How would you evaluate some of the script/narrative choices the screenwriter has made:
  Adapting the story for the screen? Use of storytelling devices? Developing the character(s)?
• What kinds of comparisons can you make between your film and other films screened in class? Or other films you might have seen?
• What did you need to know for the film to make sense?

BE A MOVIE CRITIC:

• What is your overall critical “take” on the film?
• How would you compare it with other films of its genre?
• What would you change or do differently?
• Add your own questions/ideas here

Discussion Format: The format you use for your discussion is up to you. While you may
pose questions to the class, you are required to come up with some critical insight of
your own. You are encouraged to engage the class how you see fit.

Enhancements: Consider assigning a short reading/article to the class beforehand. Also,
consider taking a scene or two from the film and highlighting it in class.

Submit on Your Discussion Day:
Outline Only. Your outline should include your discussion points. Include contextual material as well as:

• Bibliography of all sources used (including film reviews and historical data). Use APA format.

Assessment will consider:

• How prepared you are to conduct a lively and thoughtful film presentation.
• The extent to which you address “media” aspects as well as “movie” (eg. directorial/narrative) aspects.
• The extent of your insight and criticism
• The extent to which you cover your allotted time
