Case 1: Select a company either real or fictious. Completely describe the company including where the company is located. Determine the minimum services that must be maintained for the company after a disaster. What services must be restored first? what services do you think can be put off until later?

Case 2:  Facilities coordinator is a critical role in disaster recovery management. Put yourself in the position of facilities coordinator. Determine the list of qualities you have that would make you an excellent candidate for this position. Determine the list of qualities this position demands that you lack. Write a proposal for upper management on why you think you are qualified for this position.

Case 3: Search for information on system and equipment failure on your favorite search engine. List what might be done to provide fault tolerance for a single system. List what might be done to provide fault tolerance at data center level.

Case 4: You are part of a disaster recovery team charged with completing the asset inventory at a small business that primarily sells a small selection of products to the public. Establish a sample hardware asset list for this company and classify those assets as tier 1,2 or 3. Develop a list of the software needed to restore operations of a small business.

Case 5:  Your organization has approximately 10 TB of data, and you need to decide if your organization should have on-site or off-site tape storage. Your organization must be able to recover data no older than one month as an operational requirement. Your organization’s further requirement is that recovery operations must resume at minimal levels for all systems within two weeks of a total catastrophe at the data center. Decide how your organization should house its backups.

Case 6:  A major hurricane has struck the area where your company has its central data center. There are offsite backups and hardware at three other data centers around the country. Assume that the area is suffering greatly from the hurricane’s impact and your company cannot continue operations until the central data center’s operations resume. Briefly describe the activities that need to occur to setup the emergency operation center for your company and where your company should locate the center.

Case 7: You have been asked to test the disaster recovery plan for a small business in your area. The company has a backup plan that is well documented. Describe the steps you would use to test the plan to ensure that the backup plan would function in case of an actual emergency.

Case 8: As part of the disaster recovery planning at a medium sized business, you have been asked to develop a project plan to test the backups of production systems. Develop an outline of the project plan for the testing.
