Respond to two of your classmates’ posts. Peer Person One: Elizabeth Wright When the COVID-19 pandemic hit America, one of the worst results that I faced was lack of social activity with friends. First, my parents asked me not to interact with my friends and risk my health by catching the virus. Second, my friends’ parents told them the same thing my parents told me. Third, some of these parents specifically said to avoid me, because they associated COVID-19 with Asians, and I am half Asian. The best results I had from it is being with my family because not only did we work and stick together, but also my sisters and I supported each other because they also faced discrimination from people, so we were able to bond together as a family. With regards to the quotation, I think smaller places like Houston have been able to come together in the face of disaster, the best example of this being the response to Hurricane Harvey. Larger places, like America or the world, have greater difficulty in coming together during disasters, for three basic reasons. First, some people don’t trust others, such as people who distrust the government and other leaders who say to wear masks. Second, some people ignore other people, such as younger people who are told to practice social distancing and choose not to by partying and hanging out with their friends. Third, some people hate other people and want to see them suffer because of the disaster, such as racists who are happy to hear that the pandemic is disproportionately affecting the African-American or LGBT communities, and who hope that the disaster continues so it can continue to inflict harm on communities they hate, even if it hurts others as well. So I generally agree with the statement in some circumstances. Peer Person Two: Valeria Moreno Unfortunately, COVID-19 resulted in me not visiting Colombia this summer with my father. It was going to be the first time going with him since I was 8 years old, so I knew this summer was going to be special to me. On the contrary, this pandemic has given me a break of the real world. I have been working non stop since I was 15 years old and I know I will be for most part of my life. Also, it has opened my eyes to appreciate the things that value in life. For instance, my family, health, nature and peace of mind. Lastly, I strongly agree with Richard Jewell because it connects to what is happening today in Texas. In my point of view, Texas is trying to work together to find the right solution but also hurting its own state by not being on lockdown. He states, “refusing to do anything about it- that a society must suffer the disaster longer or even fail as a society,” refers to Texas having more care for the economy than the actual spread of the virus. If you ask me, I would do a complete lockdown for a good two month, we need it.
