ETST 131 Conflict and Social Power Relationship Between Violence Discussion

Help me study for my Social Science class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.

Prompt: Analyze the relationship between violence and one or more form of social power. Include a discussion of how violence functions in society as well as how nondominant groups combat one or more forms of violence.

Potential ways to respond to this prompt include (but are NOT limited to) answering the following kinds of questions:

• What theories and methods have authors in this class proposed to analyze the relationship between violence, power, privilege, and/or oppression? Do you agree, disagree, or partially agree with these authors? Explain.
• Which key terms, concepts, and authors explain how violence functions in society?
• Which people(s) and group(s) are most affected by violence? Why?
• Can social forms of power be understood in isolation (by themselves)? Can violence? Why or why not?

Guidelines:

• Draw on course readings and materials to define and explain how violence functions IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
• Clearly identify and explain the form(s) of social power you have chosen to analyze.
• Choose no fewer than one and no more than three forms of social power.
  • See the syllabus and course materials for more on forms of social power. You may also choose ones related to but not explicitly discussed in class, but be sure to tie your discussion into the course readings and materials!
• Introduction should include a thesis statement (an argument that can be agreed with or disagreed with)and a roadmap that explains the structure and the main points you will touch on in your essay.
• Cite at least three course readings and/or films.
• Use (and explain) at least three key terms and/or concepts.
• Paper should be approximately 2000 words +/- 10% (papers that are more than 200 words below or above the specified length will receive a grade penalty).
• Citations from outside sources are not required.
• A works cited or bibliography is not required, unless you include outside sources.
• Include parenthetical citations, footnotes, or endnotes. BE SURE TO CITE YOUR SOURCES (even when paraphrasing)!
• Papers should be double-spaced, standard font.
