   economic changes. These included:
   The scientific revolution
   The Enlightenment
   The Industrial Revolution
   Consider the causes and, most importantly, the long-term effects of each of these events. In a threeto five-paragraph essay, explain which event was the most important to world history, in your opinion.
   Your essay should provide historical evidence to support why this event had the most important
   political, economic, and social effects on Europe and the rest of the world. It should also include one
   paragraph explaining why the other two events are less important than the one you choose. Be sure
   that your essay contains a strong thesis statement that lays out your basic argument. (10 points)

7. Imagine that you are a world-renowned British writer in the late 19th century. Two groups have
   approached you, each asking you to write a letter to the sultan, the head of the Ottoman Empire. One
   group wants you to convince the sultan that he should begin pushing the empire toward
   industrialization. The other group wants just the opposite: to convince the sultan to continue resisting

   Since both groups are paying well, you decide to help both! Write two short letters to the leader of the
   Ottoman Empire. The first should provide convincing evidence that his country would benefit from
   industrialization. The other should warn him of the harm that will come to the Ottoman Empire if he
   decides to industrialize. The advice in each letter should be supported by evidence from the course.
