Mr. Hicks
ENG4U
Seminar
On Monday, our class will be holding a University-style seminar discussing King Lear.
Seminars are round table discussions wherein a teacher (or Professor/Teaching
Assistants) and students discuss a selection of readings. Seminars are meant to be an
opportunity for students to share their ideas, present their arguments and learn from
one another.
For this seminar, you will need to:
1) Complete all the readings for the play King Lear.
2) Express your opinion in the facilitated discussion! You will need to show your
critical thinking abilities and some creativity by thinking on your feet.
3) Respond to both the teachers’ and your peers’ questions and comments, while
debating in a professional and persuasive manner.
Note that this will not be about reading off a script, but rather participating in the
conversation organically. This is not a speech or a presentation, but rather a more
informal but moderated discussion.
In a seminar, you are marked according to your participation in the discussion, your
ability to debate your position reasonably, the ideas you bring forward and your ability to
articulate those ideas clearly and professionally.
You cannot be forced to speak, but if you choose not to speak there won’t be much
grounds for you to receive a positive mark!
Expect each seminar to last for approximately one hour.
Possible Discussion Questions:

  1. What does the play tell us about old age?
  2. Is Edmund truly a villain?
  3. What do you think Shakespeare was trying to say about the symbolism of
    disguises?
  4. What do you think evokes more pathos: Goneril and Regan’s betrayal of their
father, or Lear realizing he was an old fool?
  5. Did you learn any lessons from the play? Discuss only one lesson.
  6. What message do you think Shakespeare was trying to tell the audience about
    brothers Edgar and Edmund?
  7. Think about the personalities of Kent and Cordelia. Would you want your child to
    be like them?
  8. Which characters convincingly presented the theme appearance versus reality
better: Goneril and Regan, or Edmund?
  9. Why did Shakespeare introduce a love triangle?
10.How should we judge the Duke of Albany?
11.What do you think Shakespeare was trying to say about the King of France’s love
for Cordelia, whether she had a dowry or not?
