PMU Social Humanities Country Reports Produced by The US State Department Discussion

I’m trying to study for my Social Science course and I need some help to understand this question.

Discussion Board on Current Policies on the US-Mexico border

During our discussions last week, I drew out the argument put forward by Joe Nevins (2002) that the United States government’s “boundary control policy in and of itself” is a human rights violation.

For today’s class, I’ve asked you to read about contemporary border control policies — including both the MPP policy and the more recent pandemic-related decision to shut the border to all “nonessential traffic” (which includes asylum seekers).

On this discussion board, I’d like for you to consider the connection between Nevins’ argument back in 2002 and the conditions on the ground today. I expect two things from you:

1.By now, you should each post a response to the following two questions:

• Do you consider these policies enacted by the Trump administation (MPP and the border shutdown) human rights violations “in and of themselves”?
• Should there be any limitations, on human rights grounds, on a country’s ability to control access to its territory?

2. Then, engage in discussion and debate with your classmates by responding to at least two other posts. This second piece of the activity should be completed by midnight tonight.
