I really need 2 separate replies (about a paragraph each) to the 2 concepts/ theory below Psychological audience analysis is basically understanding the audience and how they feel about the topic you will talk about. An example is if you are in a Math class, you will not be talking about Psychology. what is surprising about this concept is that not only is it used in public speaking settings, but it is something to know when just talking to a group of friends. This concept is pretty known and nothing is hard to understand about it. The steps after learning this concept would be to apply it when I am giving my speeches in this class as well as in the future. You should always know the audience you have when you are giving a planned speech so that is a similarity that I had when learning this concept. You should know how to keep the audience engaged as well as presenting the topic in an appropriate way. This concept is something you will learn in other classes, but you won’t actually know the name to it, just the idea. In other classes you may have a presentation on a topic so you need to know how to start off the presentation and keeping the audience engaged as well as having information that has credibility to make a point. Communication everyday uses this theory as when you are talking to a group of people about church, you are not going to start talking about a party you were at the other night because you are understanding the audience you are speaking to. A great example would be at a funeral you will not want to bring up how much fun you had with your friends the night before since you understand the attitude from the audience. This section of the chapter explains itself pretty well leaving me with no questions. HE SECOND ONE.. Systemic desensitization is the idea that if we are exposed to the things that makes us anxious more often, we become less anxious about them. Public speaking is a common fear for many, which is understandable because not a lot of people speak to larger crowds on a daily basis. This can bring a lot of anxiety to an individual however, if a person does public speaking more often , they will become more comfortable doing it which will lessen their anxiety. I find this interesting because for any situation or task that brings me anxiety, I tend to want to get away from it. I can see now how that really is not helping me in any way. After reading about systemic desensitization, I definitely want to apply it to myself more. Like the author mentioned, taking this communications class will benefit me because it will force me to communicate more with others, which in return will decrease my anxiety. Systemic desensitization is applicable to many things in our lives. The only way we will get comfortable in doing something new is if we consistently practice it. That applies to our jobs, learning new concepts in school, and other things that typically bring someone anxiety such as public speaking. I think the saying “practice makes perfect” fits the idea of systemic desensitization.
