Here are the details: The research paper will need to be at least 6 pages long, not including the Works Cited page at the end. You may go up to 8 pages long, but if you wish to go beyond that, please contact your instructor. The paper will have MLA Style for documentation of sources and formatting. Please refer to the resources located in this unit for assistance. If you have any questions about formatting, please let me know. (But this is the same formatting as all previous assignments.) The topic is based on your unit 4 research paper proposal assignment. If you’re having trouble, think about the topics you wrote about in your unit 2 reader response assignment. Or even Google potential topics: “college English research paper topics”. You can likely find some ideas that you’re interested in. (As stated in unit 4, be wary of turning your paper in just a report.) The paper will need to have a thesis to keep the paper focused and organized. Unit 3 explains how to develop the thesis and use it for organization. Include a visual aid such as a picture, graphic, table, or chart in the research paper and give credit to the source of this visual aid. In the six pages this assignment requires, the graphic should take up no more than one-half of one of those pages. (That really means 5.5 pages of writing with .5 of a page allowed for the visual aid). This visual aid requirement is to be in compliance with state guidelines for the class. Don’t just choose a random picture and put it at the end of your paper. Choose something that informs or gives more information to your reader. Put it in the section of your paper where it makes the most sense. And most importantly, research how to give credit correctly to your visual aid. The paper needs to have at least 4 outside sources. At least two of these sources should be library-based and two can be non-library sources. By non-library, this means general web pages found through a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. 7. The last page of your paper should be your Works Cited page, in MLA format. There are resources in this unit on how to format this page. Be aware that citing your sources is not just listing the websites. ALSO: A Works Cited page is only half the job of citing your sources; a Works Cited page is used in conjunction with in-text citations which are located throughout your text and indicate where you’ve specifically used your sources. Again, this unit contains information on how correctly input these into your paper. These two elements – a Works Cited page and in-text citations – are the key to avoiding plagiarism. 8. The paper should use a formal, academic tone of voice. 9. The paper is to be an original creation for this course session and not a reworking of any previous essay submission from any prior course experience.
